The music video to Prince’s BATDANCE (1989). I was in love with it. The song is a strange mishmash of dialogue, riffs, grooves, snippets of unreleased songs, and sound effects, enlivened by a purple-hued ballet duel between multiple Jokers and Batmen—and Vicky Vales, walking onto the set straight from what seems to be an assembly line. In the middle of all that there’s Prince, or “Gemini”, one part Batman, one part Joker.
Prince withdrew his original song, “Dance with the Devil”, feeling it was too dark, and substituted it at the last minute with “Batdance”, really throwing everything and the kitchen sink at it. It’s all strange and sexy and funky, and, like the future, it works.
“ I think being angry and sad at the same time really turns me on.”
